(Yicai Global) Dec. 17 — Alibaba Group Holdings said total active consumers on its bargain online shopping platform Taobao Deals and community e-commerce platform Taocaicai stood at 270 million at the end of September, a three-fold increase from a year earlier.

Average daily order volume on the two platforms had climbed more than 400 percent by the end of the same month from a year ago, the Hangzhou-based e-commerce giant revealed at an online investor event yesterday.

The event marked the first public appearance of Trudy Dai, president of Alibaba’s Community E-commerce, which combines Alibaba’s consumer-facing and wholesale marketplaces following the company’s organizational changes announced on Dec. 6.

Alibaba’s retail marketplaces served as many as 946 million monthly active consumers in China in the first three quarters, 65 million more than in the same period last year, Beijing Youth Daily reported today, citing data from Alibaba.

The company said its new multi-app strategy had brought in more consumers. The core apps are Taobao and Tmall, but Taobao Deals, Taocaicai and Xianyu have offered new options and strong growth. Taocaicai aims to enhance user loyalty while meeting households’ daily needs, Alibaba said.

Regarding its strategy for less-developed areas, Alibaba will enhance warehouse construction in rural areas, and its logistics provider Cainiao will build automated distribution centers in various counties. Less developed areas are small cities, counties and rural areas, which involve higher service costs owing to the larger geographical area that needs to be covered and a dispersed population.
