China Experts Seek Infant Formula Marketing Oversight: Xinhua
(Bloomberg) –More regulation is needed over marketing behavior of firms that make products serving as breastfeeding alternatives, according to a Xinhua report on Friday, which cited a government scientist among those speaking at a nutrition forum this week.
- Infant formula marketing is a major factor behind more mothers opting against breastfeeding, and in China while birth rates are on the decline, formula sales are rising, according to Lai Jianqiang, deputy director of the Institute of Nutrition and Health of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention
- Recommends instead taking additional measures to promote breastfeeding
- A second expert also suggested additional regulations on marketing of breast milk substitutes and infant foods, as well as other changes including implementing family-friendly policies in the workplace
